Dambach la Ville
Dambach la Ville
ou will be surprised to learn that up to 1871, the night watchman was still singing the hour in the streets of Dambach. However, it is not that difficult to imagine him as one visits this city that has preserved its medieval enclosures with its moats and doors with impressive towers.

This setting is quite unexpected, especially if one approaches Dambach from Sélestat on the National Road. Dambach has been awarded many distinctions for its preservation of the half-timbrered houses, the narrow pictoresque streets, gables, a profusion of flowers... The comings and goings of the wine-makers and local people add an authenticity to the scene. The wine festivities, carefully planned, express both the profound love of tradition mixed with the reality of today's world.

The name Dambach comes from Tannenbach, which means a place planted with fir trees. At its origins Dambach belonged to the lords of Bernstein, a branch of the family of Eguisheim-Dabo, parents of Saint Odile and the Alsatian Pope Léon IX. The names Bernstein (Barenstein) and Dambach (Tannenbach) explain the coat of arms of this small city: a bear fond of honey who puts his two paws on a fir tree. Why then the full name of Dambach-la-Ville? Another Dambach exists to the north, about 10 kilometers away and in order to avoid confusion, the name was extended. However, according to an initial proposition in 1920, Dambach-la-Ville should have been called Dambach-la-Vigne, due to the importance of wine in this region (over 400 ha) : the city is the home of more than 30 wine growers (alsace record)

Dambach-la-Ville has a rich history. The fortifications give testimony to this fact. The inhabitents of the city participated in the war of Soulier in 1493 as well as the war of the Rustauds in 1525. Numerous witch trials took place in the Episcopal court of justice. This court was housed in today's "Maison Mersiol" (rue de l'Armé Française). Women who were judged as witches were burned. Robbers were put in the stocks in front of the Town Hall. Dambach-la-Ville also suffered terribly during the Thirty Years War at the hands of the Swedes and the Imperials.

Hotel aux 2 clefs à Dambach-La-Ville
Run by the Mersiol family since 1896, the hotel-restaurant aux 2 clefs is situated right next to one of the famous medieval towers. The "Winstub" (wine tavern) decorated with traditional paneling is housed in the oldest part of the establishment. The basement contains a very old cellar where the owner makes his own wine in numerous oak barrels.
