The history of La Petite Pierre begins in the Middle Ages. Considering the highly strategic location of the place, Bishops build a castle in the XIIth century, in order to guarantee the free circulation between the Alsatian plain and Lorraine.
From La Petite Pierre, the road was also offering a way to Bitche.
From the Celts to nowadays, the green Vosgian landscape has inherited many monuments. This wonderful heritage will take you for a trip through ages, from Lichtenberg Castle (XIIth century) to the sanctuary and the gothic apse (1417), passing by Saint Louis' Chapel (1683). And perhaps you will be the one who find the hidden treasure in the Donon landscape ...
Used as stores by the abbey since the Middle Ages, the caves in Graufthal were throughout the years converted into homes. Their occupation is certified by the "1760" inscription on the lintel of the door, and were permanent until 1958.
The Museum of Alsatian Seal evokes the story of our provinces: Alsace and Northern Vosges, by presenting a few seals and original documents as well as hundreds of Alsatian facsimile on specific subjects such as Sovereigns of the Holy Empire, of France, families, places, religious institutions, Orders of Chivalry, corporations and organizations... Reconstitued shields, emblazonned gonfalons, barrel helms, together with a background noise create an atmosphere evoking medieval times in Alsace.
On the place of a church dedicated to Sainte-Croix, a sanctuary was build in 1417 by Earl Burkhard. The remarkable Frescoes covering the vault show different scenes of the "Story of our Salvation". They date from the same period and are among the oldest in Eastern France.
Today capital of the Northern Vosges Regional Park, La Petite Pierre is located in the center of Poet's René Char's "high vegetal sea", which covers 300 600 ha.
After resisting during 7 centuries to the destruction, and finding a new life at every turn of History, the prestigious Lichtenberg Castle could not be condamned to disappear...
At the beginning of the XXIst century, the castle will house a Regional Cultural Centre completed with an information centre for Rhines' Castles, a temporary exhibition room, an educational service for school children, a refreshment area and an open-air theatre.
A contemporary touch into a construction of the past.
This landscape, and all its richness, contains many forest roads which will satisfy walkers of all levels.
