At the 1992 Edinburgh summit, The European Parliament was confirmed that it will continue to be based in Strasbourg.
732 Members of Parliament are directly elected (since 1979) from the 25 member states of the Union: Germany (1957), Austria (1995), Belgium (1957), Denmark (1973), Spain (1986),Finland (1995), France (1957), Greece (1981), Ireland (1973), Italy (1957), Luxembourg (1957), The Netherlands (1957), Portugal (1986), Great Britain (1973), Sweden (1995), Cyprus, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Slovenia.
The European Parliament is involved in the process of drafting Community laws and plays a key role vis-à-vis the Commission and Council of Ministers in the decision-making processes of the European Union.
The Members of Parliament meet once a month in Strasbourg in the new Parliament building which is specially being constructed for providing the European Parliament the facilities it needs to fully complete its duties in Strasbourg.
